Adding the right decorative pillows to a sofa or bed is like icing on a cake–the decorative detail that transforms a piece from adequate to amazing! It’s also the easiest and most flexible way to introduce a punch of color and change the look and feel of a room. If you were to remove the soft blue accent pillows from this sofa, you can appreciate the very neutral palette of the room. By simply swapping out these decorative pillows (with a little help from my design software!), the mood completely changes from a cool, beachy feel to a warm, modern vibe. If there’s a hot new color you’re dying to try, instead of running out and painting your entire room in it, start with an accent pillow or throw that you can easily change out over time. This allows you to stay on trend without having to redecorate every six months. Speaking of trends….to pouf or not to pouf is the question?
Poufs are everywhere I look these days – all over magazine layouts, retail catalogs, and blog postings. While “pouf” is technically defined as “a round ottoman,” they are much more versatile. They add creative, impromptu seating, can be used as a soft footrest for stretching out in your favorite chair, and with no hard edges, are ideal for kids rooms and play spaces. To me, poufs are the 21st century reincarnation of the ever popular 1970’s bean bag chair. They’re a bit more structured and sophisticated, but still a way to add a whimsical statement to any room.

Mixing patterns gets a room noticed. Start with a decorative pillow that combines your favorite colors and pattern. Add solid and patterned fabrics that compliment the colors of the main pillow. Be sure to vary the scale and lines of the patterns so that they don’t compete with one another. Mixing different textures also adds visual interest.
