Easy DIY Home Decorating Projects: Paint

April 4, 2014 By Mary Kyryk

I’ll admit I love to try my hand at easy DIY home decorating projects. It’s such a feeling of accomplishment to create a fabulous accent piece, and I find it quite therapeutic!

It always amazes me how something as simple as paint can totally transform an object. Check out these easy projects that even a novice DIY’er can try.

DIY Photo Frame

Project via A Thoughtful Place

This lovely embellishment is created by starting with blue painters tape, spraying it with gold paint, and attaching to the corners of a picture frame. Depending on the color of the frame, you could use silver, bronze, or even white spray paint. Since it’s painters tape, it can easily be removed when you want to change the look. The texture of the tape adds a bit of interest to the smooth surfaced frame. So simple, so chic!

Interior Front DoorInterior Door PaintedI’ve often wondered why we only paint the exterior of our front door? Why not add a little splash of color on the inside too? Choose an accent color that harmonizes with adjoining spaces to pull the look together. You can go as bold or as subtle as your decor dictates. How much more warm and inviting is this foyer by simply painting the interior of the front door?

And what about spray painting metal objects? With the right prep, it’s a pretty easy project with amazing results. You’ll want to sand the surface with fine grain sandpaper until the metal appears dull or matte, then wipe clean with a tack cloth. Adding a primer coat will also help the paint to adhere and last longer.  Even if purple isn’t your taste, what a dramatic transformation of this dated brass chandelier!

And it’s always satisfying to rescue a vintage find and bring it back to life. This old, rusted milking stool looks like it had seen better days. A few coats of bright orange spray paint gives it a fresh look outfitted for any modern decor.
